• Running email on different domain/subdomain/TLD

From Waethorn@VERT to All on Mon Sep 5 01:24:23 2022
I have a domain ending with a .email TLD that I'd like to use for Internet email only. Is there an easy way to set up Internet email so that it only responds via this domain, and prevent the "regular" web and other services domain (it has a .cloud TLD) from trying to accept email, or otherwise interfering with it but still have the software be "okay" with email on a different domain?

This is the checklist of things that I thought I would need to do to set this up:

Add it to the extra domain as per the instructions here: http://wiki.synchro.net/config:domains.cfg

Do all the appropriate DNS configuration with my domain host, like adding the MX record only for the .email domain as well as all the typical anti-spam options like the DMARC/SPF/DKIM settings on that domain (although I read DKIM isn't supported by Synchronet yet).

Am I missing any other software configuration options, or is this completely unsupported and doomed to failure?

Nevermind. I think I found the answer:

    http://wiki.synchro.net/config:sbbs.ini

    HostName
    Default: <none>

The public Internet DNS host name of this server.

If not set, the host name configured in SCFG->Networks->Internet E-mail->System Address will be used.

Note: The [Global] HostName setting may be overridden by a HostName value in the subsequent server sections of this file.

I used this method, and then set up the global hostname in sbbs.ini manually to configure the primary public DNS name for everything else. I didn't see a way to configure the global hostname other than manually editing the file. I tested it with a new user login and the welcome screens now correctly report the domains in the proper places.

What's odd is that I can't find in which configuration file that SCFG stores the Internet E-Mail -> System Address setting. Is it stored in a binary file somewhere?

It sounds like you want your Internet email domain to be *only* the .email address, in which case, just set SCFG->Networks->Internet E-Mail->System Address to the '.email' address. If you want the mail sever to be "okay" with receiving mail for your other domain name, then add it to your domains.cfg file.

Do all the appropriate DNS configuration with my domain host, like adding the MX record only for the .email domain as well as all the typical anti-spam options like the DMARC/SPF/DKIM settings on that domain (although I read DKIM isn't supported by Synchronet yet).

You'll want to set the "hostname" value for the other servers to the .cloud address, especially the web server.

    ctrl/msgs.cnf, yes it's a binary file.
